Will Work for Candy
Ah, the Red Bucket. Just the thought of opening its tin lid and being greeted by the most wonderful selection of chocolates and fruity sweets evokes feelings of happiness and delight. But why? Why is it that when Susie sends out that ever so famous phrase through email: “Red Bucket Open”, people half kill each other getting up to the Marketing Suite for the chance to grab hold of a delicious piece of bliss? I know I’d do the same if my office (erm cubicle) were downstairs, of course. What is it about candy that gets us all happy? Is it just the fact that it’s free?
It’s a known fact that chocolate is a mild stimulant to humans mainly due to the presence of theobromine, the primary alkaloid in cocoa and chocolate and partly responsible for chocolate’s mood-elevating effect (yeah I Googled that one).
Initially the “Red Bucket” (coined by Ms. Habegger herself) was to produce motivation amongst the staff. You know, when someone does something that merits more than just a slap on the back and a “Good job”.
Of course we all know the reasoning behind the concept has strayed its course a bit. But even the fact that the Red Bucket is only open on occasion keeps us alert for the next time it’ll be opened by the powers that be. After all, it is free candy, right?
